Gothique IV Post Mortem
Oct. 11th, 2004 06:48 pmor: Free at last, free at last! Thank God A'mighty, I am free at last!
Gothique was a big success this time. I planned for eight outfits, completed them all, and was very satisfied with all of them (with one or two minor hitches). I got lots of sleep the week before the show, and thus I was much, much less stressed out than for the last show. So much less stressed out that when one of the dresses tore very noticeably, I was able to calmly get out the repair kit and patch it on the scene.
I'd like to thank the Gothique staff (
jgreywolf,
alexiarnps,
staxxy, and more) for putting the whole thing together and herding us all around (meow, meow, MEOW!) in a calm, collected manner.
I'd like to thank
djeternaldarkness for doing a great job with the music, and having good ideas when one of my tracks turned out to be dead air (durn iTunes music store anti-piracy code!).
I'd like to thank
archel for doing all the makeup, and Anna's friend Harmony for the hairstyles. You are both artists.
I'd like to thank all the people in attendance at the Catwalk who cheered so loudly for my models, and who gave me all the compliments afterwards.
I'd especially like to thank all my models: Diana (who's not on LJ ... yet),
oracle2c,
evillinn,
archel,
la_roja,
thevfrchick,
morfydd, and
savannarama. You were all easy to work with during the run-up to the show, and then kept your cool all day during the show. And you all looked fantastic -- the best designs in the world would fail if they weren't worn by women as stunningly beautiful as those I have the good fortune to know.
And last, but most importantly, I'd like to thank the love of my life,
theda. Thank you for making me stay on schedule, thank you for all your ideas and opinions even if I didn't always take your advice, thank you for keeping track of the details that I always forgot, thank you for being organized the day of the show, thank you for helping all the girls get dressed and for keeping them company when I was running around, and thank you for being a rock I could always depend on. And thank you for loving me and supporting me even though I couldn't pay all the attention to you that you deserved. I love you so very, very much. I won't say I couldn't have done it all without you, but if I had I'd probably be in one of Katy's straightjackets by now.
Lessons learned this time:
I've created a barebones web site: http://www.lovelyweardesign.com. I'll be fleshing it out in the next week or two with photos, descriptions, "about me", etc. I'm hoping to take a commission every couple of months, so if you liked my designs, please tell people you know who might be interested. It would be nice to actually make a little money from this hobby -- making my women friends look drop-dead sexy is all well and good, but I got bills to pay... ;-)
Speaking of photos, I'll be accumulating all the photos of my designs that I find on the web onto my site here. In each case, the photographer has said to feel free to pass them around, just don't remove the copyright information. One of Kevin's group shots is here.
Assuming that Gothique is still going strong, the next show I do will be Spring 2006. I want to spend the next year with my girlfriend, not my work table. But I'm already accumulating ideas, so you can all look forward to more cool stuff.
Now I'm going to catch up on all the things I've been putting off: cleaning my house, upgrading my computer, etc. But tonight I'm going to load up the CD and play a nice game of Civilization, which I haven't been able to touch since January!

Lessons learned this time:
- Save the experiments for projects not part of a fashion show. Everything went so much better this time because I wasn't trying to do anything I didn't already know how to do, which let me concentrate on the design rather than the techniques.
- As a corollary to that, thematic unity is good; don't try to present things from all over the map.
- Have the materials on hand to fix everything on site; and have the physical and emotional reserves to deal with disasters; in other words...
- Get lots of sleep the night, nay, the week before the show.
